Considering a move from IRC to Matrix / Element

Hi all,

Colin, Gio, Justin, and myself have been exploring Matrix<https://matrix.org/> / Element<https://element.io/> as an alternative to IRC for IDRC and Fluid Project chat. Mozilla made the switch<https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/synchronous-messaging-at-mozilla-the-decision/50620> from IRC to Matrix in December, and we’ve looked at their criteria and evaluation of Matrix and Element (particularly around the client’s accessibility, as documented by Marco Zehe<https://www.marcozehe.de/how-to-use-element-and-matrix-with-a-screen-reader/>) as well as trying the service ourselves. At this point, we’d like to schedule a lightning talk for this Thursday (October 22) after standup to share what we’ve found and get feedback from the broader community before we move forward any further.

In the meantime, please feel free to explore at the links I shared in this message and if you have any questions you’d like to put on the table for the lightning talk and following discussion you can add them to the Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AS1RsbSls5XfTxAbxAGRSCh7LgUuRVI0aNYsMngVb7g/edit#heading=h.9c0j4nlphmwf

Cheers,
Ned
