Subversion for design files: can we do better?

Hi James,
I would love to see a DAM used for digital media for the reasons your
mentioned.
I personally would love a system that gave the community a more organic way
to share and annotate images / videos. Currently I've been using an ad-hoc
system of the wiki to collaborate on designs and Jira to connect it to my
work. The problem is that I would end up with multiple clones across
different systems which creates an issue of maintenance.
SVN, Jira, and the wiki aren't great solutions, so anything that helps make
it easier to share design work is very much appreciated!
