There is a great (and short) video posted on John Resig's site  
outlining his vision of the short-term future of jQuery, Javascript,  
and the browsers.

The jQuery developments are especially interesting.

It amazes me is that with each major release the jQuery team squeezes  
sizable performance improvements out of some of their fundamental  
functions. They are already considered to be one of the fastest  
toolkits out there, and yet they find new ways around the  
inefficiencies of an interpreted scripting language dependent on the  
browser's interpreter. One would think that there just wouldn't be  
that much room for improvement. I continue to be very impressed by the  
toolkit developers.
