Topic: PhET: Number Pairs Description: PhET Interactive Simulations is designing the Number Pairs simulation. It is a simulation focused on decomposing a number into two addends, and putting two addends together to create a total for number 0-20. It is aimed at early math learners ages 4-7. We are in early development with relatively solid visual layouts with pointer/touch based input ideas about interactions that support learning goals. Early development questions are elevating design questions related to alternative input and effcient groupings of objects and interactions. Research shows students visualize and organize numbers in different ways. Some focus on location, others focus on the attribute, so the sim allows learners to play with these ideas of location and attributes and how they affect addends. One design challenge we want to explore is how to make accessible movable objects that also have the ability to change color on demand.
