As a follow up, I’ve started a wiki page about Matrix with some general information for connecting to our channels.

Thanks

There are some IRC clients that help bridge the gap, such as irccloud.com <http://irccloud.com/> however, they only benefit those using a similar client and are limited by the protocol itself.

If there are no show stoppers we plan to switch to Matrix as our primary means of synchronous communication starting Nov 16. At that point we’ll also explore setting up a bridge between Matrix and IRC to help with the transition.

Mozilla made the switch <https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/synchronous-messaging-at-mozilla-the-decision/50620> from IRC to Matrix in December, and we’ve looked at their criteria and evaluation of Matrix and Element (particularly around the client’s accessibility, as documented by Marco Zehe <https://www.marcozehe.de/how-to-use-element-and-matrix-with-a-screen-reader/>) as well as trying the service ourselves. At this point, we’d like to schedule a lightning talk for this Thursday (October 22) after standup to share what we’ve found and get feedback from the broader community before we move forward any further.
