Default branch name in GitHub

While this has actually been in effect since Oct 1 I just now realized that by default GitHub creates new repositories using “main” instead of “master”. I’m not intending to weigh in on the naming debate here, but I do think we need consistency.

For details about the name change and how to manage it, see https://github.com/github/renaming <https://github.com/github/renaming>

What I’d propose is that we pick a name that the community is most comfortable with. Below are the tasks to address after a decision is made.

Options:

Keep Master:
Update the organization settings for the “Repository default branch” name
Change any newly created repos to use “master” as the default branch
Use Main:
Update all existing repos to use “main” as the default repo
Update our individual forks as needed
Use some other name:
Update the organization settings for the “Repository default branch” name
Update all existing repos to use “main” as the default repo
Update our individual forks as needed

Thanks
Justin
