Hi Everyone,

The Fluid Project is now using Matrix <https://matrix.org/> / Element <https://element.io/> for our online collaborative discussions. Please see the Matrix Channel <https://wiki.fluidproject.org/display/fluid/Matrix+Channel> wiki page for information about the various rooms available. Past logs for the IRC Channels are available in the fluid-irc-logs <https://github.com/fluid-project/fluid-irc-logs> git repo.

Thanks everyone and hope to see you on Matrix.
Justin

I haven’t heard any show stopper issues as of yet, but please do weigh in on your experience. We’re currently still on track to switch to Matrix as our primary synchronous communication channel on Nov 16.

>>>
>>> Like IRC Matrix is a protocol that supports use with a variety of clients
>>> Element is a client for accessing Matrix
>>> Matrix and Element are both open source projects
>>> Mozilla made the switch Matrix at the end of 2019
>>> Mozilla worked with Element to improve accessibility
>>> Matrix/Element provide a more Slack like full featured synchronous communication platform that includes options for audio/video calls
>>>
>>> We have been finding that an increasing number of people joining our community are expecting to use a modern chat platform for communication and are having difficulty understanding/working with IRC. There are some IRC clients that help bridge the gap, such as irccloud.com <http://irccloud.com/> however, they only benefit those using a similar client and are limited by the protocol itself.
>>>
>>> As of last Thursday we’ve opened up a Fluid Project Matrix community <https://matrix.to/#/+fluid-project:matrix.org> and matching rooms for the purpose of evaluating Matrix. However, at the moment, the IRC channels are still our primary means of synchronous communication.
>>>
>>> The proposal is to spend the next two weeks evaluating Matrix. Please provide feedback on your experience. If there are no show stoppers we plan to switch to Matrix as our primary means of synchronous communication starting Nov 16. At that point we’ll also explore setting up a bridge between Matrix and IRC to help with the transition.

Mozilla made the switch <https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/synchronous-messaging-at-mozilla-the-decision/50620> from IRC to Matrix in December, and we’ve looked at their criteria and evaluation of Matrix and Element (particularly around the client’s accessibility, as documented by Marco Zehe <https://www.marcozehe.de/how-to-use-element-and-matrix-with-a-screen-reader/>) as well as trying the service ourselves. At this point, we’d like to schedule a lightning talk for this Thursday (October 22) after standup to share what we’ve found and get feedback from the broader community before we move forward any further.
