I came across the GitHub Archive Program <https://archiveprogram.github.com/> today. In short, our code should be safe for a really long time. The first long term snapshot will be taken on Feb 2, 2020 (02/02/2020).
GitHub will be preserving Open Source code both now and well into the future. The plan is to store copies of GitHub repos for up to 10, 000 years.
In addition to that they mention their current redundancies for accessing GitHub repos, including through the Internet Archive and the Software Heritage Foundation. Part of this is to ensure broader access in the immediate term in case of routing restrictions, and also to preserve access if there any catastrophic events.
I’m not sure about the long term preservation, but the near real-time and monthly/yearly updates also include issues, PRs, wikis and etc.
Thanks
Justin
