Atl-text descriptions and link labels

Hi Yura,
I hope along with the images appropriate short text strings are being
obtained from McCord, both for the artifact images and for the exhibition
images, and these are used as alt-texts on the main pages describing the
artifacts / exhibitions.
With regard to thumbnails, it is debatable whether the list view thumbnails
need to be provided with alt-text that actually describe them or they could
just have a null string alt-text. I vote for the latter. However, since they
serve as links, I think they should have link labels set with the same text
as the titles following them because telling the user that they have a link
and not telling where it will lead them makes it difficult for them to
decide whether to invoke it or not.
Link labels on images becomes important in the grid view because, for
example, on the exhibitions page (
http://build.fluidproject.org:8095/engage/exhibitions/browse.html?db=mccord),
when I toggle to grid layout, all I can hear with Voiceover is "link image,
link image, link image ... ".
As sighted users, we can learn from physical placement that some elements
are grouped together, but that information is not easily available to screen
reader users. In the list view there are sets of three contiguous links that
take me to the same page. Is it possible to group them together as one
clickable region and provide that region with a link label?
Hope the way I wrote it makes sense. Else, please shoot your questions.
Sam
Thanks.
Sam
